Crime is a prominent issue in South Africa. South Africa has an extraordinarily high rate of murders, assaults, rapes (adult, child and infant), and other crimes compared to most countries. Most emigrants from South Africa state that crime was a big factor in their decision to leave. The South African Police Service is responsible for managing 1115 police stations across South Africa.
In February 2007, the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation was contracted by the South African government to carry out a study on the nature of crime in South Africa. The study concluded that the country is exposed to high levels of violence as a result of different factors, including:
A survey for the period 1998–2000 compiled by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime ranked South Africa second for assault and murder (by all means) per capita and first for rapes per capita in a data set of 60 countries. Total crime per capita was 10th out of the 60 countries in the dataset.
The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute have also conducted research on the victims of crime which shows the picture of South African crime as more typical of a developing country.

South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is a country located at the southern tip of Africa. It is divided into nine provinces and has 2,798 kilometres (1,739 mi) of coastline. To the north of the country lie the neighbouring territories of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe; to the east are Mozambique and Swaziland; while Lesotho is an enclave surrounded by South African territory.
South Africa is multi-ethnic and has diverse cultures and languages. Eleven official languages are recognised in the constitution. Two of these languages are of European origin: South African English and Afrikaans, a language which originated mainly from Dutch that is spoken by the majority of white and Coloured South Africans. Though English is commonly used in public and commercial life, it is only the fifth most-spoken home language. All ethnic and language groups have political representation in the country's constitutional democracy comprising a parliamentary republic; unlike most parliamentary republics, the positions of head of state and head of government are merged in a parliament-dependent President.

The high walls, electric fences, and private security guards surrounding South Africa's residences and businesses are as inherent to the country's landscape as Table Mountain is to Cape Town. And with good reason — South Africa's 2012-2013 crime statistics were the worst in a decade, with increases in murder, attempted murder, violent armed robbery, and carjackings.
Fear of crime has led to a boom in South Africa's private security industry since apartheid ended 20 years ago. The field's quick expansion is largely a result of continued social and economic inequality, increased violence, and inept police forces.
VICE News traveled to South Africa's mother city Cape Town to look at the lifestyle gap between those who can and cannot afford the luxury of safety.

African prank on security guards, stealing cars in front of them. This prank was fairly dangerous as the security guards attacked and did their job. In many parts of Southern Africa (mainly South Africa) hijacking cars is to be expected as the police and security are not effective enough, also, the difference between rich and poor is extremely high causing high amounts of crime.
Thankfully, we live in peaceful Botswana and this is not as common. Initially we decided to focus our prank on the security guards to see how they would respond to these types of situations - some helped, some were scared but most were encouraged to do their job when the public were involved. A very interesting point Healy noticed was they are more effective when they have a baton or weapon as it gives them confidence. We suggest security companies should invest in arming all their staff with batons. This prank quickly turned into a social experiment as we kept doing it around town. We noticed many passing pedestrians would stop and help the security guards - thank you!

Some of her attackers live in her street and she now fears for her life. Frustrated that the police will do little to help she approaches the local taxi firm to help her get revenge. "Will you be satisfied and stop crying once we've beaten them?" the firm ask her. At 4am the girl points out her township tormentors to willing vigilantes. They strip the culprits naked, strap them to a lamp post and lash them. The girl herself gives the first stroke. The legacy of apartheid leads South Africans to such violence, when even the police disregarded their own laws. The mob ruled when it black against white. This past has depersonalised and dehumanised. The police stand accused of apathy but often they are frustrated by clever criminals. But unless the police earn people's trust, vigilantism may become the norm.

And with good reason — South Africa's 2012-2013 crime statistics were the worst in a decade, with increases in murder, attempted murder, violent armed robbery, and carjackings. Fear of crime has led to a boom in South Africa's private security industry since apartheid ended 20 years ago. The field's quick expansion is largely a result of continued social and economic inequality, increased violence, and inept police forces. VICE News traveled to South Africa's mother city Cape Town to look at the lifestyle gap between those who can and cannot afford the luxury of safety. In many parts of Southern Africa (mainly South Africa) hijacking cars is to be expected as the police and security are not effective enough, also, the difference between rich and poor is extremely high causing high amounts of crime. Thankfully, we live in peaceful Botswana and this is not as common. Initially we decided to focus our prank on the security guards to see how they would respond to these types of situations - some helped, some were scared but most were encouraged to do their job when the public were involved. A very interesting point Healy noticed was they are more effective when they have a baton or weapon as it gives them confidence. We suggest security companies should invest in arming all their staff with batons. This prank quickly turned into a social experiment as we kept doing it around town.
